Message subject : Big players selling to push the price

I havent been trading shares for long but I have noticed something that disturbs me slightly. In days before an announcement is due on a stock there seems to be a large sell-off on most stocks.

Is this the big players selling out to push the price DOWN to create fear in the stock so they can buy back in at a better entry price.

If this takes place I am a bit concerned about where this leaves the small investor, as the so called Mums and Dads make up a large percentage of share holders in this Country.
